Steamed Treacle Pudding


Steamed Treacle Pudding with Golden Syrup
Steamed puddings have been around for many years and they are basically a sweet sponge that gets steamed over hot water for 2 hours, now don't let the time put you off, after all the best things in life are worth waiting on and this is true for Steamed Pudding

Steamed puddings come in a great variety, today I am making Steamed Treacle Pudding with Golden Syrup, but other great puddings are steamed Christmas Pudding, Figgy Pudding, Steamed Chocolate Pudding, Jam Steamed Pudding, and the infamous Spotted Dick (*raises an eyebrow - no not an aliment suffered by your neighbor but a pudding made with dried fruit like raisins or currants)

So on to the recipe

This recipes requires a glass bowl about 6 cups size and self raising flour, if you are not familiar with self raising flour, you can get it in any grocery store here in the USA and around the world, also it requires Golden Syrup, this British syrup really makes this recipe shine and a must if you can find it, I found it in the International section of my USA grocery store, if you are in Britain/Canada/Australia and have it at hand, I am jealous

Makes one amazingly delicious steamed pudding

You will need

3 tbsp Golden Syrup (and more for pouring later)
200g/7oz Self Raising Flour
100g/3.5oz Brown Sugar
100g/3.5oz Fine Sugar
2 tbsp Treacle or Molasses
4 large eggs
200g/7oz Softened Butter
2 tsp Baking Powder
pinch of salt

Ingredients


  • First grease the bowl with butter and place 3 tbsp of Golden Syrup in the bottom

  • In a large mixing bowl, place all the other ingredients, and blend well using an electric hand mixer for about 3 minutes

  • Spoon the cake mixture into the small bowl on top of the Syrup

  • Cover with 2 layers of foil, and tie with string, make sure you pleat the foil slightly to allow for the cake to swell while cooking and tie the foil tight with string (you don't want any water getting into the pudding)

  • Place the glass bowl into a large pot and fill the pot with water halfway to three quarters of the way up the glass bowl, bring water to boil then turn down to simmer and place lid on top

  • Steam the pudding for 2 hours until fully cooked (the pudding is cooked through when a skewer comes out clean) Note : keep topping up with BOILED water throughout the two hours cooking time)

  • Once pudding is cooked, take off foil and let cool slightly. Then using a knife ease around the edge to loosen then tip the pudding onto a serving plate
British Steamed Pudding

  • Drizzle more syrup on top and finish by cutting into slices and serve with some warm custard, 
Enjoy this amazing steamed pudding straight away while it is still warm
