Making Spice Mixes

This year I am going to try to make more at home. Every time I go into the grocery store I almost cringe when I buy the simple thing that can easily be made at home. Seriously, if I have the ingredients, it takes less than five minutes, it should be a given. But I like most if the shoppers fall to the ease of convenience and/or fancy packaging.

It is easy to buy blended spice mixes or grinders which are colorful, have images of amazing meals, and of course are well known. My top three are McCormick Monterey Steak Seasonings, Old Bay, and Lawry's Seasoned Salt. However, all of them have similar base ingredients, are easy to mix, and honestly you can not tell the difference between homemade and store bought once you get down the proportions.

Another good reason to make them from scratch is usage. How often do we use even half of the package before we throw it out? Some mixes only come in one size and using a few teaspoons at a time, it is a lot of waste. Making it from scratch really allows you to make as much or as little as you could use. You can easily replace used spice mixes often and keep them fresh and enjoyable for the family! Remember most spices do not last for full flavor or taste more than 90 days! Give a try to making these blends, you will find it as a great gateway to making up your own mixes you enjoy!
